So verliert man schnell mal 100 Dollar...Ob da so viele Besucher wiederkommen?

City breaks ground on Coney Island’s Steeplechase Plaza, set to house historic B&B Carousel

Shuttered area under the Parachute Jump will house restored ride

The historic B&B Carousel is being restored and will return to the Coney Island Boardwalk.

A historic carousel is set to come home to Coney Island in a new Boardwalk plaza the city will break ground on Thursday.
Construction is starting on Steeplechase Plaza, a 2.2-acre plaza under the iconic Parachute Jump that is now closed off and dormant, which will house the century-old B&B Carousell when it opens by summer 2013.
The ride, the last of Coney’s historic carousels, was set to be dismantled and auctioned off until the city stepped in and bought it for $1.8 million. It’s now being painstakingly restored in an Ohio workshop.
“It’s a gorgeous carousel and it will be a great addition back to the Boardwalk,” said Todd Goings, owner of Carousels and Carvings in Marion, Oh., who is doing the $2 million restoration.
There are 50 wooden horses hand-carved by master carvers Marcus Charles Illions and Charles Carmel.
“It’s believed to be one of the last one or two carousel that was carved by Carmel himself,” said Goings, who has been working on the carousel for three years. “It’s a machine that’s well over 100 years old, (and) now that we’ve rebuilt it, with proper maintenance and care, for the next 100 years it will still be there.”
The carousel will be placed in a glass-doored, two-story pavilion - which will allow it to keep running in the winter - on a $29.5 million plaza that visitors can enter by walking under the legs of the landmark Parachute Jump, now off limits to the public. “This new open space...will serve as an important link to Coney Island’s past, and a symbol of its bright future,” city Economic Development Corp. President Seth Pinsky said.
There will also be an exhibition inside the building on the history of the carousel and Coney Island, seating and open space for events, a fountain, and a patch of trees dubbed Luna Forest. “It’s going to be a wonderful little park that opens up to the Boardwalk,” said David Rockwell, founder of the Rockwell Group, which designed the plaza.

New sky-high ride coming to Coney

all_giantconeycoaster_2011_12_02_bk01_i.jpg

Coney developer Central Amusement is planning to build a Skycoaster ride and a go-kart track in this empty lot near the Boardwalk.

Thrill-seekers will get a bird’s-eye view of Coney Island next summer — at speeds of up to 60-miles-per-hour — when Central Amusement opens a new ride that combines the thrills of bungee jumping with the thrills of, well, skydiving.

The new Skycoaster will swing harnessed riders through the air on cables stretched between two roughly 110-foot-tall towers, sending riders at the breakneck speed back and forth in a pendulum motion. The ride lasts roughly five minutes.

A spokesman for Central Amusement did not say how much each thrill will cost, but said that the Skycoaster will join a new go-kart track inside of the Speed Zone, an amusement park a stone’s throw from the Boardwalk that’s scheduled to open next April.
Central Amusement promised to bring new, state-of-the-art rides to the historic amusement district after being tapped by the city to revitalize the heart of Coney Island in 2009.
In 2010, the company opened Luna Park, the first new amusement park to open in the People’s Playground in almost 50 years. Central Amusement also opened Scream Zone, another amusement park, this spring, drawing praised from city officials who backed the Bloomberg Administration’s vision for a “new” Coney Island.
“Coney’s best days as America’s Playground for the 21st century are yet to come,” said Borough President Markowitz.
So far the parks have been a hit: approximately 640,000 people visited them this summer, taking more than 2 million rides, according to the city, which leased the land to Central Amusement in a 10-year deal.
But the company’s effort to remake the Boardwalk has gone less smoothly.
