shanghaidaily.com schrieb:
Mayor meets CEO of Merlin Entertainments Group

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met with Nick Varney, chief executive officer of Merlin Entertainments Group, last Friday.
Yang said Shanghai welcomes foreign cultural projects and the Yangtze Delta region has a huge potential for theme parks because of a thriving economy, a large population and convenient transportation.

The mayor said LEGO is a popular brand in China. LEGOLand and its products are loved by Chinese children. The Shanghai government supports Merlin Entertainments’ cooperation with CMC Holdings, which is funded by Alibaba, Tencent and Suzhou Oriza Holdings with a total asset of over 10 billion yuan (US$1.48 billion).
He hoped Merlin Entertainments will take this cooperation as an opportunity to develop business and new projects in China.
Varney said his group has already invested in Shanghai, such as the Madame Tussauds wax museum. The UK company hopes to bring LEGOLand theme park to Shanghai.
He said Merlin Entertainments Group will work closely with its Chinese partners to build Shanghai LEGOland into a special theme park with Chinese elements.

A LEGOLAND theme park is due to open in the Dianshan Lake area in Qingpu District within five years, the Merlin Entertainments Group said yesterday.
The project is expected to be launched within three years and finished by 2022.
“The outdoor amusement theme park covering several hectares will promise a very fun experience,” said Yang Shengjun, channel marketing director of Merlin Entertainments China. It will be Lego’s first outdoor park in China.

Anscheinend legt Merlin in China jetzt richtig los!

merlinentertainments.biz schrieb:
Agreement with Jinshan District Government, KIRKBI, CMC Inc. announced as part of China International Import Expo 2019

Merlin Entertainments (“Merlin” or “the Company”), a global leader in location based entertainment with brands including LEGOLAND®, Madame Tussauds and the Dungeons, today announces that it has entered into an agreement with the Shanghai Jinshan District Government, CMC Inc. and KIRKBI to develop a LEGOLAND® Resort in the Jinshan District of Shanghai, China.
Under the terms of the agreement, all parties will form a joint venture company and contribute funding to the construction and development of LEGOLAND® Shanghai. The total project investment is expected to be approximately £500 million. The schedule for the project is still to be determined, but the project is not expected to open until after 2023.
LEGOLAND® Shanghai will be one of the largest LEGOLAND® Resorts in the world and will incorporate a 250-room fully themed hotel on opening. It will be located in the Jinshan District in south west Shanghai with a two-hour catchment of 55 million people. The region comprising Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui has an estimated population of 220 million.

The announcement was made at an event attended by the Executive Vice Mayor of Shanghai Mr. Chen Yin as part of the China International Import Expo (5-10 November). China is a focus of significant development and investment by Merlin. Since the start of 2018, the Company has opened five new Midway attractions, including the world’s first Peppa Pig World of Play (Shanghai) and Little BIG City (Beijing).

China is a strategic growth market for the LEGO® Group. During the past few years the company has significantly expanded its retail operations and by the end of 2020 is on track to have 220 stores in more than 50 cities. The company began distributing products in mainland China more than 30 years ago. It opened a regional office in Shanghai in 2014, followed by a flagship store in the city in 2016. It also opened a state-of-the-art production facility in Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province in 2016 to supply products to China and the Asia Pacific region. The brand now has three flagship stores in Beijing and Shanghai.

Merlin currently operates 13 Midway attractions in China including LEGOLAND® Discovery Centers, Madame Tussauds, SEA LIFE Centers, Dungeons, Peppa Pig World of Play and Little BIG City.

Dependent on opening schedules, LEGOLAND® Shanghai will be opened after LEGOLAND® New York (scheduled to open 2020) and LEGOLAND® Korea (scheduled to open 2022).

Since the Shanghai Legoland Resort project signed a preliminary investment cooperation agreement on November 6 last year, the partners have entered the business negotiation stage of a formal cooperation agreement. In the past 10 months, due to the impact of the global pandemic, all parties have been unable to communicate face-to-face, but all parties have overcome various difficulties and communicated through teleconferences and emails, and insisted on advancing agreement negotiations. A few days ago, all the agreements for the formal cooperation of the project have been confirmed by all parties and a comprehensive agreement has been reached. So far, the project business negotiation has been successfully completed.

CONSTRUCTION OF ONE OF THE LARGEST LEGOLAND PARKS IN THE WORLD EXPECTED TO BEGIN IN 2021

Merlin Entertainments today announces that it has entered into a formal co-operation agreement with the Shanghai Jinshan District Government, CMC Inc. and KIRKBI to develop a LEGOLAND® Resort in the Jinshan District of Shanghai, China. This follows the signing of a framework agreement in November 2019, announced as part of the China International Import Expo.
Under the terms of the agreement, all parties will form a joint venture company and contribute funding to the construction and development of LEGOLAND® Shanghai. The total project investment is expected to be approximately $550 million. Construction of the project is planned to start next year, and the Resort is expected to open in 2024.
LEGOLAND® Shanghai will be one of the largest LEGOLAND® Resorts in the world and will incorporate a 250-room fully themed hotel on opening. World-leading creative, design and construction teams will work together to create an immersive theme park, drawing inspiration from famous scenic spots in Shanghai, Jinshan District and the town of Fengjing. It will be located in the Jinshan District in south west Shanghai with a two-hour catchment of 55 million people. The region comprising Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui has an estimated population of 220 million.

China is a focus of significant development and investment by Merlin. Since the start of 2018, the Company has opened five new Midway attractions, including the world’s first Peppa Pig World of Play (Shanghai) and Little BIG City (Beijing). The LEGO Brand has also been established as the leading toy brand in China and has seen annual double-digit growth for more than a decade. With millions of LEGO Fans now in China, the basis is certainly established for LEGOLAND Shanghai.
The building of the LEGOLAND® Shanghai Resort is part of the Jinshan District’s ‘five-year plan’ for the area, which seeks to establish a new area of cultural and tourism development in this region of the Yangtze River Delta. It is envisaged that the construction of the resort will be accompanied by the establishment of other businesses in the vicinity including hotel accommodation, retail, sports facilities, offices and high-end housing.

NICK VARNEY, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF MERLIN ENTERTAINMENTS, SAID:
“China represents a great opportunity for strong global brands and I am delighted to work with our partners to bring one of the world’s largest LEGOLAND® Resort to Shanghai, which builds on the other attractions we have developed in this exciting part of the country. The Shanghai LEGOLAND® Resort will be a must-visit destination for playful learning experiences for the millions of people who live in the vicinity and beyond. The Merlin team looks forward to working with our partners to develop the creative concept design for the resort and making it a reality, marking a significant milestone for Merlin’s presence in the Chinese market.”
