A Look at Cedar Point's Luminosity

Cedar Point recently had an off season tour for Coasterbuzz members which included a nice presentation covering the park's $6 million new nighttime spectacular called Luminosity.

The above images are from this video of the presentation, which also includes some goodies from the park's General Manager, John Hildebrandt. The show is much more elaborate than I previously imagined, and I'm so happy to see that new company CEO Matt Ouimet's influence is playing out here.

Luminosity will require a total renovation to the Iron Dragon midway, turning it into Celebration Plaza. The plans for the area can be seen above, but include the removal of the current Iron Dragon queue, replacing it with a gigantic stage. The entire area looks to have a distinctly non-Cedar Fair look to it.

The show will have 25 live dancers, three drummers, two cirque style performers, live singers, DJs, themed sections, pyro, blasting current tunes, and more. The plaza will be the hub of the event, but more of the park will be involved. Millennium Force, the Giant Wheel, and Power Tower are getting new light packages, and the entire midway from the entrance gates to Corkscrew are getting light towers, embedded lights in the concrete, and other festive additions. It is all about atmosphere.

I'm pretty excited to see how Luminosity turns out, also because Mr. Ouimet previously said that its debut at Cedar Point is a test of sorts, and if successful this could (will) be rolled out to other parks.

2013 investiert Cedar Point 25 Mio. $!!!

While speaking to the Erie County Chamber of Commerce, Cedar Fair CEO Matt Ouimet said Cedar Point's 2013 capital expenditures will total $25 million. He also made references to opening up the view of the beach.

CELEBRATION PLAZA EXPANSION

Cedar Point has announced that it is expanding its new Celebration Plaza. As a part of that expansion, Cedar Point will be removing the WildCat roller coaster.

WildCat was coming to the end of its useful life. With the desired expansion to Celebration Plaza, coupled with the low ridership and increased maintenance costs, Cedar Point has decided to accelerate the removal of the ride. WildCat will be removed from the park prior to Opening Day and the materials will be sent to a recycling facility.

This expansion is one of several initiatives that will beautify the park midways and enhance guests’ experiences. Additional improvements include state-of-the-art lighting packages on Giant Wheel, Millennium Force and Power Tower, a new sound and lighting system along the park’s Main Midway and the re-painting of the Millennium Force and Blue Streak roller coasters.

Cedar Point remains committed to being the roller coaster capital of the world. New roller coasters, rides and attractions will always be a part of Cedar Point’s future.​

Wenns nur um die Zahl geht, wird Cedar Point aber bestimmt bald wieder einen neuen errichten. Allein schon wegen des Titels, der marketing-technisch doch so einiges hermacht ;-)

Deshalb müssten ja rechnerisch gleich 2 Bahnen folgen, vermutlich irgendwas für die Kleinen, n Kiddy-Coaster oder so, und dann was imposantes für uns Großen

Ich glaube die Bahn wurde sogar schon abgebaut/verschrottet:

Der Park mag eine längere Pause in Sachen neuer Achterbahn eingelegt haben und hat dadurch leider einen werbewirksamen Titel verloren, hat aber ja über weite Strecken trotzdem neue interessante Attraktionen geboten ( Shoot the Rapids, Windseeker, … ).

Anhand der Chronik seit 1964 lässt sich ablesen, dass es in Sachen Achterbahn schon längere Pausen ( bis zu 8 Jahre; zwischen 1979 und 1987 ), aber auch den absoluten Boom ( 1989 - 1991 = 3 und 1999 - 2003 = 4 neue Achterbahnen ) gab. - Gut möglich, dass die aktuelle Pause ( immerhin schon 5 Jahre seit Maverick ) nur die Ruhe vor dem großen Sturm ist ( I hope so ).

Allerdings stellt sich die Frage, wohin mit möglichen Giganten, das Platzproblem lässt sich ja nicht wirklich von der Hand weisen. - Vielleicht wie beim Europapark teils auf den Parkplatz ausweichen oder evtl. Stützen in den Lake Erie setzen ( ? ) , … würd´ mich ja mal interessieren, wie der Park da plant …

Letztlich ist es aber ja so, dass Cedar Point ein sehr sehr ordentliches Pfund zu bieten hat und einer der wenigen Parks ist, der auch bei zwischenzeitlichen Durststrecken nicht so schnell seine Anziehungskraft verliert …

Man sollte immer bedenken, dass man nicht unendlich viele Achterbahnen gleichzeitig und wirtschaftlich betreiben kann. Ich denke da werden so langsam grenzen erreicht in SFMM und CedarPoint.

Trotzdem denke ich wird Cedar Point oder SFMM weiterhin ordentlich Achterbahnen sich in den Park stellen. Weil zum einen sind die 2 Parks immerhin die Aushängeschilder von Six Flags & Cedar Fair und zum anderen sind die Bahnen die einzigsten Gründe weshalb die Parks überhaupt besucht werden. Wegen dem guten Essen oder den Flatrides fährt sicherlich keiner an der Erie See. Und wegen dem möglichen Platzproblem. Ich kann mir ja nicht vorstellen das die einen Teil vom Erie See aufschütten dürfen, deshalb bleibt nur der Rückbau vom Parkplatz bzw. die Nutzung vom Parkplatz übrig. Oder ältere Attraktionen abbauen. Ich könnte mir zum Beispiel gut vorstellen das der Stand Up oder die Indoor Bobbahn irgendwann mal das gleiche Schicksal haben könnte wie jetzt Wildcat bzw. innerhalb von Cedar Fair einen neuen Platz finden. Und Mean Streak wäre ja auch so ein Kandidat.

Lassen wir uns überraschen, ich bin überzeugt das Cedar Point einen adäquaten Ersatz für Wildcat präsentieren wird.

Das dort immer weiter gebaut wird, zweifel ich ja nicht an. Nur so langsam ist man sicher an einem Punkt, wo man nicht nur aus Platzgründen anfängt auch zu überlegen welche andere Bahn weichen muss.
