2 rescued from Dallas bungee ride

A three-hour ordeal 50 feet up

DALLAS (AP) — A bungee ride in Dallas apparently arranged by a woman to help her future husband face his fear of heights turned into a three-hour ordeal 50 feet up when the cables got tangled.
Dallas firefighters used an aerial ladder truck Monday night to rescue William Mancera and Thalia Rodriguez of Irving.
Dallas Fire-Rescue Lt. Joel Lavender said Tuesday that neither was injured.
Lavender says the couple, who plan to marry next year, seemed in good spirits after the incident and mentioned that Mancera has a fear of heights. Lavender says the ride was meant to be kind of a fun thing, as "a gift on her part, a challenge on his part."
Mancera and Rodriguez could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday. Neither has publicly listed phone numbers.

BUFFALO, NY - The New York State Department of Labor is issuing two violations to Darien Lake Theme Park following the accident on the "Ride of Steel" that killed an Army veteran.

According to findings from the Department of Labor's investigation, the death of Sergeant James Hackemer was, "the result of operator error." The investigation also found the roller coaster to be mechanically sound and all safety devices working properly.

Sergeant Hackemer, 29, of Gowanda, was killed when he fell from the roller coaster. Hackemer lost both of his legs in battle in Iraq in 2008, and his family said he was not wearing his prosthetics when he boarded the ride.

The Department of Labor says, "The Park's safety and operational requirements, which were visibly posted at the entrance to the Ride of Steel, were not followed by the ride operators. These rules require that riders have both legs, because the safety devices restrain the legs, shins, and lap to hold the rider safely in the ride's car."

The two violations issued by the Department of Labor are for operators who were not properly trained on the safety and operations restrictions of the Ride of Steel, and operators who were unfamiliar with the safety requirements of the Ride of Steel.

The roller coaster was shutdown following the accident, but beginning today Darien Lake is being allowed to operate the ride after complying with the following orders:

- All employees who operate the Ride of Steel have been retrained in safety procedures
- New, clearer signage has been posted in the Park that describes ride safety regulations
- Park management must now review all safety restrictions on every ride prior to the start of each ride operator's shift

“Xcelerator's wires snapped (bottom right) felt like final destination. YouTube this shit so you know how fast/crazy it is and how surreal the wires snapping was”

Man Injured On Harry Potter Roller Coaster

Man Possibly Blinded While Riding 'Dragon Challenge'

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Universal theme park in Orlando shut down the "Dragon Challenge" roller coaster on Sunday after a man was injured and possibly blinded.Carlos Montalvo told Local 6 he and his wife were on vacation from Puerto Rico but said by phone from his hospital bed, "This is not a vacation. This is a nightmare."Montalvo said they were in the front row of the ride inside the Harry Potter attraction when he says something hit him in his right eye. He still does not know what hit him, but said it happened just as the two coasters veered near each other. He remembers the pain he felt as he rode the rest of the ride screaming and wounded.Universal reopened "Dragon Challenge" around 1:30 on Monday after determining the ride is safe.A statement from Universal spokesman Tom Schroder went on to say, "We have also spent the hours since then thoroughly inspecting and re-inspecting the ride, the ride vehicles, the tracks and the area underneath the tracks. We have found absolutely nothing that could have contributed to this incident."As Montalvo remains in the hospital, his brother told Local 6 he's a nurse back home, already had one bad eye, and whatever hit him may have taken his remaining good eye.Montalvo said nobody else knew what happened, but his wife sitting next to him was in shock.Universal said it will do what it can to help this family and said nothing like this has ever happened on this ride since it opened under another name in 1999.Montalvo contacted an attorney at the law firm of Morgan and Morgan, although it is unclear whether he intends to seek legal action against the theme park operator.
